Dr Maxine King is a counselling psychologist and accredited cognitive behavioural therapist offering psychological therapy to adults with psychological and emotional difficulties, or those looking to enhance personal development.
Maxine is trained in a variety of evidenced-based psychological therapies, in which she has undertaken further specialist training, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and CBT third wave approaches including dialectical behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and schema therapy. Maxine is also trained in eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) which is an effective, evidenced-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
Maxine works with her clients and their goals for change, drawing from various psychological approaches and evidenced-based practice guidelines to develop an individually tailored conceptualisation of the problem areas and approach to therapy. Maxine aims to provide a safe and compassionate space to work with her clients to build a shared understanding of the nature of the difficulties, ultimately working to find better ways to manage and address psychological and emotional distress.
Maxine works with clients who maybe experiencing an acute period of difficulty to those with long standing emotional and psychological problems. Maxine is specialised in working with the following problem areas:

Maxine also welcomes those who may be uncertain of what the problem is or are uncertain as to whether therapy can help, and those who are interested in self-development.
Depending on need, Maxine offers both short-term and longer term therapy.
Training, qualifications and experience
Maxine has worked in mental health since 2001 and she has been in clinical practice since 2004. She has a doctorate in counselling psychology, a post-graduate diploma in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is a registered practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) which is the government’s statutory regulating authority for psychologists to ensure they meet national standards of training, professional skills and behaviours. Maxine is also a fully accredited CBT psychotherapist with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).
Maxine has worked in various NHS settings throughout her career holding senior psychologist positions where she was responsible for leading, managing and supervising psychology teams. Maxine now works solely in private practice.

Maxine accepts referrals from those covered by Cigna and Aviva health insurance.
After an assessment, which typically takes place over one or two consultations, therapy takes place on the same day and time each week.
